Home Cleaning – 5 Tips For The Rainy Season

Regular home cleaning is essential because the heat in Lagos can be unbelievable sometimes. The place can get so hot that you begin to wonder if you’re in Western Nigeria or the Sahara. This is the reason why when you catch that whiff of petrichor (you know, that smell of earth and water that tells you rain is coming), the excitement is undeniable.

Until it actually starts raining… 🙃

Sure the weather is cooler, but you have to deal with the smell of Lagos, the mud and all that dirt that gets vomited right back into the streets from the gutters… The actual ghetto.

Dealing with all of that outside is enough. I’m sure you would just want to come home to a dry, germ-free environment. So here are a few Home Cleaning hacks to keep all that rainy season messiness away from your home.

Get an outdoor foot mat

You can’t afford to bring all of that dirt and dampness from the outdoors into your home. Get an outdoor foot mat where you can properly stamp and wipe your feet before you get into your space.

The rainy season comes with a lot of moisture and wetness. Wet floors will attract more dirt and mud and can cause you to slip and fall.

We don’t want that for you. So wipe your feet, mop up your floors, and let’s leave all that moonwalking for Michael Jackson.

P.S. Leave your shoes out in the sun to dry. Damp shoes have the worst smell and can cause your feet to have infections.

Keep your home dry

Dampness can be very problematic if you don’t handle it well and quickly. Your clothes, ceilings and walls can develop moulds and smells which can lead to chronic respiratory issues if you inhale the air within these spaces over a period of time.

You have to keep your house properly ventilated, invest in dehumidifiers, and try out different home fragrances like camphor balls, diffusers or fragrance blocks that suit your preference.

Also, try to find the root cause of the dampness. That probably points to a leakage problem from the roof, poor drainage systems and other technical building issues. Stay safe and call an expert when you need to.

Stock up on Insecticides and Repellants

The rainy season unavoidably comes with a collection of pools of water which can be a breeding ground for insects and germs.

Let’s face it, the season is summer body season in the mosquito kingdom. To save yourself from being part of the refreshments menu for their summer rave, it is important that you use insecticide or pest repellants regularly.

You can also make sure no pools of water are collecting around your house and all your windows and doors are properly fitted with nets to keep out the creepy crawlies

Clean your bathroom often

Since the bathroom is where you go to wash away all the dirt you’ve “gathered” during the day, it is important to clean it as often as you can.

It’s in your best interest that you disinfect your surfaces and drainages regularly in order to combat the growth of these germs. Disinfectants will kill unwanted microorganisms and keep you safe from diseases.

Apart from the dirt and germs, some insects and crawlers find the bathroom a good hiding spot because of the cool temperature. Frequent home cleaning and disinfection can make your bathroom inhabitable for them and can make you spot them and get rid of them as well.

Get rid of wet clothes

I know there’s this strong urge to peel off your wet clothes and dunk them in the laundry basket or a bucket after Lagos rain has beaten your life or you might be tempted to dry your clothes inside the house.

While this is necessary sometimes, it should also be temporary. Your clothes need to be sun-dried after washing. If not, they might develop the odour that comes with dampness and make your house smell.
