DIY Home Cleaning: How To Clean Your Microwave

Microwaves are unsung heroes. We can’t count the number of times they’ve turned a bunch of leftovers into an instant meal or defrosted food that would usually take hours. For those of us that get Eden Life meals, we know how important they are, that’s why we’re bringing you this DIY home cleaning hack on how to keep your microwave fresh all the time.

Cleaning your microwave can be complicated. There are different parts and they need to be cleaned differently. We asked a few of our cleaning experts for some DIY home cleaning hacks and they explained how to easily rid your microwave of dirt.

Your microwave can be cleaned with everyday products you already have in your house like dish soap, vinegar, and baking soda. You should avoid bleach because appliance manufacturers warn that it can weaken the plastic interior of your microwave and destroy the appliance in the long run.

Interior

Your microwave interior sees the most dirt as it holds the food and gets stained from all the bubbling and splattering.

To clean it, you would need a mix of lemon, lime and water or vinegar and water. Put the mixture into an open microwave-safe bowl and turn the microwave on for several minutes. Start it on high power until the mixture boils and the window steams up. Then, let the microwave cool for five minutes before opening the door.

Take out the bowl and swipe your microwave interior with a thick sponge. You can also wipe after with a table napkin.

Door

Your microwave door gets a lot of grease and smudges because it is the most touched part of the device. The parts of the door that needs to be cleaned include the door edges, the inside, outside and the part that seals the appliance.

You can execute this DIY home cleaning hack by dipping a sponge into a mixture of dish soap or baking soda. Use the sponge to clean all the sides of the door. Wipe and clean with a dry napkin after.

The “window” of your microwave door, that’s the part that’s usually transparent, can be cleaned separately with grease remover, if it has a lot of dirt stuck on it. Apply the cleaner with a damp sponge or cloth.

Exterior

The exterior of your microwave is most susceptible to dirt like dust and food spills. You can easily clean with liquid soap and a sponge. Rinse with the same sponge and wipe with a dry napkin. Make sure not to leave water on it as it might cause rust.

Getting Rid Of Strong Smells

Your microwave might retain smells from the food that you cook or heat. You can get rid of this by airing the appliance after use or placing a bowl of baking soda inside with the door closed to absorb the smell.
