White Sneakers And How To Maintain Them

As we all know, it’s the rainy season and the rains have been pouring in full gear. The ground is always wet and muddy. The rain and mud are bad news for shoes, especially the white sneakers.

White sneakers are generally susceptible to dirt and get a bit of discolouration after being used for a while and not properly maintained. However, there’s a way to use your white sneakers and still keep the shoes “white as snow.” We’ll show you how.

Soak in Warm Water

After you wear your shoes, you can soak them in warm water to clean them before you wash. The water will dissolve some of the dirt and stains. You can also add a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to the warm water. Let your shoes soak in it for at least 4 hours before you proceed to wash.

Avoid Bleach & Other Harsh Agents

While it might be tempting to just bleach your sneakers since they’re white, it is not advisable. Most bleaching products start to give your shoes a yellow discolouration after continuous usage. It is best to clean your shoes with just soap and other naturally occurring products.

Brush with Toothbrush or Sponge

Depending on the material which your sneaker is made up of, you can brush hard-to-reach areas with a mild toothbrush.  You can also use a soft sponge to wash it around. Try to brush softly and not hard. Also, note that you can’t do this for leather sneakers, they should be cleaned and polished.

Proper Drying

It isn’t advisable to put your white shoes in a dryer. The heat of the dryer can affect the shoes and actually cause them to shrink. You should sun dry to help them last better. The sun will dry it all around and also keep the insides smelling fresh and clean.

Take Out Laces

Always take out the lace of your shoes before you wash them. This will allow you to get all the tight corners of the shoe and also help the insides dry faster. If your shoes get wet with the laces intact, the metal grommets of the sneakers can cause rust stains. Metal grommets are the fittings for the holes that the lace passes through. If the shoelace is also white, you can soak it in warm water to remove stubborn stains.

Keep It Fresh

The way your shoe smells also matters a lot and is part of the cleaning process. You can put a bulb of onion or unused teabags in your shoe for about 24 hours to absorb any unpleasant smells.

Restoration

Nail Polish Remover

If the sole of your white sneakers has been stained, then you would need a bit of nail polish remover. Apply generously to the soles of your shoe and scrub off after. If the stain isn’t too deep, your shoes will look good as new.

Toothpaste and Vinegar

You can also use a mixture of toothpaste and vinegar to restore some whiteness to your sneakers. Both substances can act as whitening agents for your shoes and boots.
